Apart from imperial reign periods, specific date marks are almost of an unlimited nature ranging from just the year to a combination of reign period, year and precise day. Although they are not found frequently on Chinese ceramics their potential diversity is considerable. My dating table above will, with a little familiarity, enable the user to translate most types of date mark. The only difficulty arises when in the case of a long mark the date may be added to an inscription of dedication to an event, person or place. Years are given unique names within the 60 year cycle by combining two characters. This results in the Ten Stems recurring six times and the Twelve Branches only five times providing a unique set of non-recurring combinations throughout the 60 year cycle, known as the jiazi, The main problem with this system is that without any further information there is no way of knowing which cycle you are dealing with. For this reason the cyclical year characters are usually accompanied in inscriptions by the imperial reign title, in which case the cycle can be identified and comparison can then be made with the Christian calendar. As official Chinese chronology starts from BCE the cyclical dating table spans cycles numbers 45 to 76, equivalent to the period 4 to CE. This table enables the character combinations for each year to be easily converted to specific years.

Bennington VT, with cobalt bird decoration p4A ItemID F A History of the Norton Family Pottery in Bennington, Vermont and Marks Used One of the most iconic objects from 18th- and 19th-century is stoneware, particularly pieces with cobalt decoration, and few people did cobalt-decorated salt-glazed stoneware pottery better than the Norton family of Vermont. Unmarked redware pieces were the earliest offerings and salt-glazed stoneware soon followed, with utilitarian wares being offered throughout the region.
A redware jar consistent in design with early known Norton pieces. Norton stoneware jug with the highly detailed decoration the firm would become known for. Edward Norton died two years after this in , at which point his son Edward Lincoln Norton took over his portion of the business. Efforts were made to diversify and for a time, the firm sold glass and other forms of pottery wholesale, but the heart of the business, the stoneware manufacturing, continued to decline steadily.

R WS 7″ brown stoneware shoulder bowl This old dark brown shoulder bowl is obviously waaaaay vintage, and may well be a true antique. Call me ignorant, but this is a new one for me! Also interesting is the upper rim of the shoulder, which is not straight like a USA piece, but almost a bevel. It is in amazingly good condition, with one old nick at the base, two at the rim, and one under the shoulder, none of which detract from its already highly rustic appearance.
Altogether a quite unique piece! Click on picture for more images.

The RHX method depends on the validity of this law for describing long-term RHX weight gain on archaeological timescales. There is now strong support for power-law behaviour from analyses of long-term moisture expansion data in brick ceramic, some of which now extends over more than 60 y. The amount of water lost in the dehydration process and thus the amount of water gained since the ceramic was created is measured with a microbalance.
Once that RHX rate is determined, it is possible to calculate exactly how long ago it was removed from the kiln. Sufficient water is available in virtually all terrestrial environments. Neither systematic nor transient changes in humidity have an effect on long-term rehydroxylation kinetics, though they do affect instantaneous gravimetric measurements or introduce systematic error i.

It was nothing to be woke up by the scream of a hunting “painter” panther at night and indoor plumbing was a dream until about As for the outdoor facilities, besides the user being required to share space with spiders, snakes and other assorted creepy crawlies, it was entirely too close to the well where the washing water was drawn. The kitchen had running water which had to be pumped with a hand pump situated on one side of the sink. The table took up most of the kitchen floor space and because there was a big family there were rough and rickety benches on either side of the table rather than chairs.
And on most other flat surfaces there were little ceramic animals that I found fascinating. If I was very good I was allowed to play with them. On the bottom of many of them was printed “Made in Occupied Japan”. When I asked her, my grandmother had no idea what it meant, nor did anyone else I asked at the time. Very likely they knew but didn’t want to have to explain a rather complicated subject to an 8 year old. But the things that I love just to be difficult have nothing to do with what has become short handed as Occupied Japan or “OC” which had an incredible vogue in local flea markets in the 80’s but earlier items made for the Five and Dime import market.
They often showed up at a local amusement park or carnival as prizes so they would appear to nominally have a use like the German Shepherd above that guards an ash tray. The little bulldog with his screwed up, pugnacious face is either guarding a dish to keep spare change and cufflinks in or a small cake of soap.

Artifacts as time markers Mean ceramic dating Large delft forms like this charger from Charles Pinckney National Historic Site have a mean manufacture date of European pottery manufacturers kept records on the ceramics they produced from the late sixteenth century onward. Therefore, archeologists know the start and end dates of manufacture for over one hundred pottery types that were used in America. Many manufacturers identified their work by pressing, painting, or using decals containing their name on the ceramic’s surface.
If an archeologist recovers a sherd containing one of these makers’ marks, she or he may identify the ceramic’s origin and date of manufacture.
